His Holiness the Dalai Lama Speaks at Radio City

On Thursday, July 17, 2008, I had the privilege to hear His Holiness the Dalai Lama speak on The Four Noble Truths at Radio City Music Hall in NYC.  It was an invigorating and enlightening talk, made more notable by the attendance in the fabled hall of an audience spanning the lifespan, from infants to elders, and traversing diverse cultures.  Most relevant to CTN Green and its readers, who share a concern for the environment, the Dalai Lama was sure to highlight the importance of a love and concern for the earth.  “Ecology in Tibet is very delicate so it needs special care,” he cautioned.  “I must mention about the protection of the Himalaya Range and protection of the environment.”  “Care of the environment should become part of our lives.”  Asked during the Q and A period how he recommends helping others, the Dalai Lama gave a long, thoughtful answer that included some practical advice: “Keep more compassion in your mind and minimize a self-centered attitude, and when the opportunity comes to help, take it.”  “An inexpensive way to help others is smile.” This comment garnered much applause.  He posited that all human beings are the same; therefore: “Take care of the rest of the human beings and you’ll feel better; the concept of we and they is outdated.”  Interesting words for these challenging times.
